Course Description:

This course is designed to identify illnesses or diseases, including cardiovascular disease, hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, obesity, cancer, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyaligia, arthritis, osteoporosis, Multiple Sclerosis, Polio and Post-Polio syndrome, and Parkinson’s disease. Evidence will be provided for exercise as an intervention for illnesses and disease.  The course will have both a lecture and lab component.  The lecture will emphasize each chronic disease and related scientific evidence.  During the laboratory session, participants will perform some of the exercises introduced during the course.

Peer reviewed research evidence will be discussed and additional bibliographic materials will be distributed.

Upon completion of this one day course the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe the illness or disease
  2. Describe the evidence for exercise as an intervention
  3. Apply principles of exercise training to create safe and effective intervention programs for patients.
  4. Discuss the risks and benefits of specific exercise for illnesses and diseases.
  5. Perform exercises for illness or disease
