Holocaust Scholars Convene to Prepare for

2005 Conference on the Holocaust and the Churches

GALLOWAY TWP, NJ On March 7, 2004, Holocaust Scholars met in Saint Petersburg, Florida to make preparations for the 35^th Annual Scholars Conference on the Holocaust and Churches.

 

The 2005 conference, coined Operation Early Warning, will coincide with the 60^th anniversary of the civilized worlds victory over Nazism, and will identify inter-communal hatred and violence and emerging terrorist groups.

 

Elie Wiesel, Nobel Laureate, founding member and Honorary Chair of the Conference, lead a group of thirty Scholars which included members from Canada, France, Germany, Israel, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

 

Conveners resolved that anti-Semitism has reached a post-Holocaust peak, demanding the urgent attention of scholars, educators, clergy, and other civic leaders, and that this crisis is of immediate concern for all faith communities.

 

The Annual Scholars Conference on the Holocaust and the Churches was founded in 1970 by Dr. Franklin Littell, Distinguished Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, and Dr. Hubert Locke, noted scholar and writer, Professor Emeritus at the Evans School of Public Affairs, University of Washington, and the Ida E. King Distinguished Visiting Scholar of Holocaust Studies at Stockton in 1992.

 

The Annual Scholars Conference on the Holocaust and the Churches is the oldest continuing meeting, studying the causes, acts, and effects of the Shoah (the Holocaust.) It is an interfaith, interdisciplinary, and international gathering of scholars, educators, clergy (both Jewish and Christian) and local communities, sharing a mission to investigate the Holocaust, the Church Struggle and the general failure of the world to confront Nazi anti-Semitism.
