Galloway Twp., NJ -- The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey has received funding for two public enrichment projects and a study tour entitled American Citizen Project for We the People that will trace the evolving definition of United States citizenship. The project, consisting of two workshops and a study tour to the National Constitution Center and National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia is being developed through Stocktons Holocaust Resource Center and is free and open to the public.
We are grateful to the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, for funding this important series, Stockton Holocaust Resource Center Supervisor Gail Rosenthal said. This series reflects the Colleges emphasis on student engagement and community partnerships. It will explore the evolving nature of American citizenship, from the earliest days of the Republic to present day.
Rosenthal said the project is meant to inform and educate students and members of the public about citizenship, so that democracy will continue to flourish. The material to be presented will examine the tension between the original ideals of American citizenship as stated in the Declaration of Independence and the realities for minorities and women as reflected in the Constitution and its amendments.
The workshops at the Holocaust Resource Center at Stockton include Who is an American? on Oct. 5 from 9:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Exploring Human Rights to take place Oct. 18 from 4:15 p.m. to 6 p.m. The study tour to the National Constitution Center and National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia is scheduled for November 16 with the bus departing at 8:30 a.m. from Stockton.
