Galloway, N.J. - The Stockton University Office of Continuing Studies has received a $10,000 grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission (NJHC) to support an African American Cultural Heritage Short Course proposed for the fall of 2019.

The purpose of the African American Heritage Short Course” would be to provide insight into the African American experience in the region and highlight contributions of community members.

The course would center in Atlantic City but would also provide opportunities to learn about the critical roles African Americans have played in the history of South Jersey in general.

The one-day event will include university and community partners, including Ralph Hunter and the African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey, in morning and afternoon workshops on various topics as well as full-day and half-day tours.

The award letter from the NJHC congratulated Stockton on its successful application, noting that grant funding for projects has remained flat for the past nine years while demand continues to increase.

The Stockton Office of Continuing Studies has successfully used the short course model to draw attention to resources key to the history and development of the South Jersey region while providing opportunities for education, professional development, and recreation. The Pinelands Short Course is an example of the short course model.

This initiative was coordinated by the Office of Continuing Studies, Bahiya Cabral Johnson, director, through a planning committee including: Lisa Honaker, dean of the School of Arts & Humanities, Wendel White, distinguished professor of Art, Nicole Tyner-Milan, associate director of the Career Center, Ariane Newman, assistant dean of the School of Health Sciences, Paul Schopp, assistant director of the South Jersey Culture and History Center, Donnetrice Allison, professor of Communications, Lisa Cox, professor of Social Work, Heather Perez, special collections librarian, Richlyn Goddard, adjunct faculty of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Linda Nelson, professor emerita, School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Mariah Duffey, assistant director of the Office of Continuing Studies.
