Embracing Free Expression and Upholding Our Ethic of Care

Dear Stockton Community,

As we navigate this academic year together, I want to reaffirm our shared commitment to the values that make Stockton such a special and supportive community.

Our Commitment to Free Speech and the Ethic of Care

At Stockton, we pride ourselves on being a place where every voice matters. We believe that free expression is a cornerstone of our academic environment, allowing us to explore diverse ideas and perspectives. However, it’s important to remember that free speech comes with responsibilities. Our "Ethic of Care" guides us to ensure that everyone in our community feels safe, seen, and heard. This ethic is grounded in dignity, kindness, respect, compassion and civility—principles that are central to how we interact with one another.

Fostering Academic Freedom and Embracing Discomfort

Academic freedom is central to Stockton’s mission, allowing our students and faculty to challenge the status quo and grow intellectually. This freedom is what makes us a "community of opportunity"—a place where everyone is encouraged to learn, grow and succeed. Part of this growth often involves stepping outside our comfort zones and engaging with challenging, sometimes uncomfortable ideas. By embracing this discomfort and welcoming diverse perspectives, we enrich our collective experience and empower one another to reach our full potential.

Acknowledging the Limits of Free Speech

While Stockton fully supports the right to free expression, we must recognize that hate speech, threats, and intimidation do not qualify as protected speech. Speech that incites violence, threatens harm, or constitutes harassment violates our commitment to a safe, respectful and inclusive campus. Our policies and procedures are clear (I-55; I-120; VI-28;1200; 3103): we do not tolerate behaviors that undermine the dignity and well-being of our community members.

Promoting Safety, Respect, and Accountability

Free expression is a powerful right, but it must coexist with our commitment to safety and respect. We all have a role in maintaining an environment where ideas can be shared openly without fear of harm. Accountability is key—each of us must be mindful of the impact our words and actions have on others.

Looking Ahead

I encourage each of you to actively engage in our ongoing dialogue about free expression and civil discourse. Let us continue to challenge ideas thoughtfully, embrace the discomfort that comes with meaningful growth and support one another through our Ethic of Care. Together, we can create a campus environment where everyone feels valued and respected.

Thank you for being an important part of this community. Together, we are building something extraordinary—a true community of opportunity where everyone can thrive.
