Meet Our New Faculty
Fall 2022 Issue
Fond Farewells and New Welcomes
After serving as dean of The School of Natural Sciences & Mathematics for seven years, we bid a fond farewell to Dr. Peter Straub this past June. But don't worry if you didn't get a chance to say goodbye — you'll be sure to run into him on campus or at the Marine Field Station (MFS), as Dr. Straub has returned to teaching in Spring 2023! His new office is located in USC2 - 212 if you want to stop by and say hello.
Although it was sad to see Dr. Straub depart, we were delighted to welcome Dr. Amanda Norvell to our NAMS family as dean. Dr. Norvell joins us from The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), where she served as interim dean for The School of Sciences. She joined the Department of Biology at TCNJ as faculty in 2001. For five years, she served as the Chair of the Medical Career Advisory Committee as well as president of the Faculty Senate. Dr. Norvell received a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and her Ph.D. in Immunology from the University of Pennsylvania. Following her post-doctoral fellowship at Princeton University, she spent a year as a visiting professor at Haverford College.
Dr. Norvell will be holding an open forum session, "Donuts with the Dean," as an opportunity to speak freely with students in an open forum. Be on the lookout for an announcement about the event in email and on social media.
🕊️ In Memoriam
It is with deep sadness that we report the passing of Dr. Jaime Cromartie at his home
on Feb. 15. Jaime graced our faculty for over 42 years, helping to develop the Environmental
Sciences Program, its curriculum, and a generation of students. On his retirement
in 2017, the ENVL faculty requested and the University conferred Emeritus status on
Dr. Cromartie. Jaime was active in causes he was passionate about including, biodiversity,
native plants, the Pinelands, the Greater Egg Harbor Watershed and the Ecological
Society. He was a consummate professional, a compassionate teacher and a well-respected
scientist. We will miss him and pray for his family, Alice, Ben and Robert, and their
extended family to find peace.
Welcome New Faculty!
At the end of the 2022 academic school year, Professor of Marine Science Dr. Matthew Landau retired after 35 years of teaching at Stockton, and chemistry professor Dr. Shanti Rajaraman and her family relocated to Georgia.
We wish them the best in their new life endeavors.
With these departures, we take pleasure in welcoming three new faculty to the NAMS family this year:
- Dr. Camilla Alves Souto, Assistant Professor of Marine Science
- Domhnall OShaughnessy, Chemistry Teaching Specialist
- Luis Arriago, Biology Teaching Speicalist
