Additional Information for Mathematics

  • Math Tutoring Center: Need extra help in your math and science classes? Looking for a job on campus that lets you help others and brush up on your mathematical skills? Then the Math Tutoring Center is the place for you. The tutoring center offers free tutoring to all Stockton students in a wide variety of mathematics and science courses.

  • Quantitative Reasoning Across the Disciplines (QUAD): The QUAD program serves to encourage the infusion of quantitative reasoning throughout the curriculum and to assure that all students enhance their mathematical skills. This page details the general quantitative reasoning requirements for Stockton students.

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs): REUs are college and university run summer programs whose aim is to involve undergraduates research. Many REUs focus on mathematics, and programs can be found at many U.S. college and universities. These are usually paid positions, where the college or university covers room and board, and pays a stipend. Application deadlines for the upcoming summer are usually in February and March. Below are two lists of math REUs in the U.S.:

Internships: Summer internships can provide valuable job experience, important business contacts, and often a source of income. Below are links to help you find internships.

Stockton's SIRE Program: The Stockton Summer Intensive Research Experience (SIRE) Program offers summer courses (up to 4.0 credits) for students interested in small group research projects. Ask a faculty member if you would like to learn more.

Graduate school is an option for many mathematics majors after earning their Bachelor's degrees. If you would like to learn more about graduate schools, your best source of information is the Mathematics Program Faculty. To get you started, here's some collected wisdom from Professors, Graduate Students, and Mathematical Societies on the subject of graduate school in mathematics:

While Stockton does not offer graduate studies in mathematics, Stockton mathematics majors are well prepared to pursue a master's degree in Data Science and Strategic Analysis, which is offered at Stockton. Information about this program can be found at:

  • American Mathematical Society (AMS): TheAMS, founded in 1888 to further the interests of mathematical research and scholarship, serves the national and international community through its publications, meetings, advocacy and other programs, which

    • promote mathematical research, its communication and uses,

    • encourage and promote the transmission of mathematical understanding and skills,

    • support mathematical education at all levels,

    • advance the status of the profession of mathematics, encouraging and facilitating full participation of all individuals,

    • foster an awareness and appreciation of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and everyday life.

  • Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM): The AWM is a non-profit organization founded in 1971. The purpose of the AWM is to encourage women and girls to study and to have active careers in the mathematical sciences, and to promote equal opportunity and the equal treatment of women and girls in the mathematical sciences.
  • Mathematical Association of America (MAA): The MAA is the largest professional society that focuses on mathematics accessible at the undergraduate level. Its members include university, college, and high school teachers; graduate and undergraduate students; pure and applied mathematicians; computer scientists; statisticians; and many others in academia, government, business, and industry. The MAA welcomes all who are interested in the mathematical sciences. The mission of the MAA is "to advance the mathematical sciences, especially at the collegiate level."
  • The Society of Actuaries (SOA): The Society of Actuaries (SOA) is the largest professional organization dedicated to serving 21,000 actuarial members and the public in the United States, Canada and worldwide. TheSOA's vision is for actuaries to be the leading professionals in the measurement and management of risk.
  • Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM): The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) is an international community of over 13,000 individual members. SIAM fosters the development of applied mathematical and computational methodologies needed in these various application areas. Applied mathematics in partnership with computational science is essential in solving many real-world problems. Through publications, research, and community, the mission of SIAM is to build cooperation between mathematics and the worlds of science and technology.
