WHAT WE’RE TALKING ABOUT

SummitRegional Summit an Anchor for Local, State Arts Organizations

As an Anchor Institution in the resort, Stockton has had a positive impact on the community and the local economy.

But President Joe Bertolino believes the University’s impact should go beyond that, including serving as a catalyst for artistic and cultural expression in southern New Jersey. That’s why he introduced a Regional Arts and Culture Summit on April 8, just four days before his inauguration as Stockton’s sixth president, happening today, April 12.

“As an Anchor Institution in Atlantic City, Stockton University is dedicated to community engagement and recognizes the opportunities that supporting the arts brings,” he said before a group of about 150 local and state arts representatives at the John. F. Scarpa Academic Center in Atlantic City. “We know the arts and cultural expression have the potential to bridge real and imagined divides in our neighborhoods and around the world.”

Greta LaFleurAnnual Talk Explores Gender, Race in Colonial America

There are niche topics within colonial American studies and gender & sexuality studies. However, few are quite as shocking as the subject of this year’s Paul Lyons Memorial Lecture.

Greta LaFleur, an associate professor and director of Graduate Studies for the American Studies program at Yale University, analyzed how castration was used as both gender affirmation and capital punishment as part of the Wednesday, April 12 lecture in the Campus Center Theatre.

They began the conversation by providing context for their research, specifically exploring the history of gender, sexuality, race and science.

Leadership ConferenceOn-Campus Conference Expands, Full of Opportunities

“You see, the reality is that for as long as I can remember, I believed and thought that I was born to lose.”

As the keynote speaker for the April 5 Inclusive Leadership Conference walked across the stage, students in the Campus Center Theatre gazed at the man and the photo of his family projected on the screen behind him. The man – Ismail Amir – talked about how he was orphaned at age 11 and how the tragedies he experienced made him take life as it came and strive only for the family behind him.

However, Amir knew that his purpose included more, and he founded iAM Legend, LLC, where he conducts workshops and trainings that encourage students to take life by the reins and become active participants in their life journeys. According to Amir, taking control of his life meant first taking control of his mind.

SPOTLIGHT ON: CLAUDINE KEENAN

Claudine KeenanWhen Claudine Keenan, current interim vice provost at Stockton, was a 13-year-old tween, she recalled seeing Sandra Day O’Connor being named a Supreme Court Justice and thought, “Look at what we can do.” This defining moment helped motivate her to be the first person in her family to attend college.

On April 6, 2024, Keenan was formally namedan American Association of University Women (AAUW) 2024 Woman of Distinction, a recognition that reflects her drive to succeed and give back, which was born at such a young age.

Here, Keenan shares a glimpse into the trajectory that led her to this significant experience and award, as well as a pretty special full-circle moment.
