WHAT WE’RE TALKING ABOUT
Four Professors Present Last Lectures Before Retiring
Four Stockton professors had one final chance to impart some wisdom to the campus community on April 6 during the second annual Last Lecture.
Each professor had about a half hour to talk about anything they wanted, even if it sometimes had little to do with what they had taught during their time at Stockton.
“This is a great event to showcase the talent and the dedication that some of our faculty have and give them an opportunity for a presentation to the campus community before they retire,” said Leamor Kahanov, the provost and vice president for Academic Affairs.
The four professors who spoke were:
- Janet Wagner, professor of Computer Information Systems. She came to Stockton in 2007 as the Founding Dean of the School of Business.
- Karen York, professor of Biology. She arrived at Stockton in 1995 and has specialized in microbiology and molecular genetics.
- David Lechner, a librarian in the Richard E. Bjork Library. He arrived in 2001 and has taught several undergraduate seminar classes. He’s a certified translator in German, Norwegian and other languages and is also a musician in the Faculty Band
Juan Tolosa, professor of Mathematics. He came to Stockton in 1986. He’s taught a wide range of classes, including Geometry, Calculus and Russian.
Literature Students Present Feminist Research in Annual Colloquium
Three Stockton students were selected to present their research during the New Jersey Women & Gender Studies Consortium’s 19th Annual Undergraduate Colloquium on March 31 at Georgian Court University.
Elizabeth Myers, Victoria Orlowski and Allison Truax were asked to present the research that they did while in their courses "Senior Seminar in Literature" and "Native American Indian Literature."
All three students were nominated by Deborah Gussman, professor of Literature, and Betsy Erbaugh, coordinator for the Women’s Gender & Sexuality Studies program.
“Though the subjects of their papers were quite different, each of the students I nominated wrote a paper that demonstrated exemplary research skills — an essential aspect of work presented at the NJWGSC undergraduate research colloquium — and insightful literary analysis that incorporated an intersectional feminist lens,” Gussman said of the cohort.
Daughters of Holocaust Survivors to Speak at Program
Atlantic Cape Community College and Stockton will present the 40th annual Holocaust Awareness Program on April 18 at Atlantic Cape in Mays Landing.
This year’s free event, which is designed to bring awareness to the Holocaust’s impact on the local community, will feature a dialogue with Linwood sisters Rita Stromfeld and Blanche Powell, whose parents were Holocaust survivors, about their book “My Mother’s Words.”
Stromfeld and Powell will be interviewed by Peter Murphy of Murphy Writing of Stockton University about the book, which is a loving memoir of their mother Helen Fassler. Fassler and her husband, Murray, were Holocaust survivors from Poland who emigrated to New York City after World War II. The book comprises a series of short anecdotal stories of lessons learned by surviving the Holocaust and coming to America.

Stockton Professors Produce Original Television Pilot
Shayna Black arrives at her first teaching job at a predominantly white institution in the rural heartland of America, where she is quickly admired for her glowing skin instead of her Ph.D.
She is not taken seriously by her students, who she is just a few years older than. A new colleague tries to set her up with the basketball coach — one of the only other Black people on campus.
Could this really be happening, or is this a work of fiction?
Turns out, it’s both. While Shayna Black is the hip-hop loving millennial protagonist in Professor Donnetrice Allison’stelevision script, the uncomfortable situations, microaggressions and ignorance were all very real to Allison, who walked in Black’s shoes as a young university professor in the 1990s.
🎬 Catch the screening at 5 p.m. tonight, April 14, in the Fannie Lou Hamer Event Room at the John F. Scarpa Academic Center. 👀 Watch the trailer here.
