The End of an Era: Celebrating President Kesselman
Today we celebrate Dr. Harvey Kesselman on his final day as Stockton's president.
President Kesselman took a chance on Stockton as a student in the first class in 1971. He found the experience transformational and has spent nearly five decades growing with Stockton, from student to professor to vice president for Student Affairs to president, with numerous other key roles along the way. As he transitions to President Emeritus, Kesselman will continue advocating for Stockton.
“As I look back on my time at Stockton, I am filled with an overwhelming sense of gratitude. I am grateful for the opportunities Stockton has provided, not just for me but for all of us, generations of people who have had the incredible opportunity to call Stockton home. I think of our outstanding faculty, our dedicated staff, supportive parents, engaged alumni, and the heart of our campus – our students. Throughout my career, I, along with our exceptional Trustees, have worked to ensure that we stay true to the motto of Students First. This mindset is part of what makes Stockton such a special place. It is a part of the fabric of the institution. Do not ever lose sight of this.”

Murphy Donates $10,000 to Stockton Foundation
Peter Murphy knew he wanted to do something special for the 30th anniversary of the Annual Winter Poetry and Prose Getaway.
As he introduced the six scholarship recipients at this year’s event, it hit him.
“I would love to offer 30 scholarships for the 30th Annual Winter Poetry and Prose Getaway next January,” said the founder of Murphy Writing, an organization that offers in-person and online programs to help writers develop their craft. “So, I will match, up to $10,000, all donations made to our scholarship fund.”
Workshop Helps Police, First Responders Adapt to Accent Diversity
The Stockton Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning (SCCESL) recently held a workshop for first responders and police officers to learn the science of accents and strategies to effectively communicate during emergency situations on Thursday, June 15, in the Campus Center.
The workshop, “Police and First Responders: Adapting to Accent Diversity,” is one of the ways that Amee Shah, professor of Health Science and director of our on-campus Cross-Cultural Speech, Language and Acoustics Lab, utilizes her decades-long research to help different populations knock down language and communication barriers.
Her work began in 2007 in a Cleveland clinic where doctors who had pronounced accents were having trouble communicating with their patients, leading to potentially dangerous situations. As a speech-language pathologist trained in organizational psychology and linguistic study, Shah was more than ready to find a solution for the clinic.

The Souls Shot Portrait Project Debuts in Atlantic City
A unique and emotionally charged art exhibit that seeks to address the urgent issue of gun violence will be on display starting June 30 at the Noyes Arts Garage of Atlantic City.
The Souls Shot Portrait Project serves as a platform for grieving families and artists to collaborate and create personal portraits that honor those lost to gun violence. Each portrait represents an individual whose life was tragically cut short, reminding visitors of the impact gun violence has on families, communities and society as a whole.
SPOTLIGHT ON: STILT
The Stockton Toolkit for Inclusive Learning and Teaching (STILT) is an online resource for faculty and other campus members that provides various resources promoting inclusive
learning environments. STILT focuses on awareness, respect, inclusion, active learning
and belonging. Development of the toolkit and purchase of digitally licensed materials
in the toolkit was generously funded by Stockton's Compass Fund.
STILT is the result of work over the past year, where project leaders Kathy Klein, executive director of the Center for Teaching & Learning Design (CTLD), and Guia Calicdan-Apostle, CTLD Diversity Faculty Fellow and associate professor of Social Work, collaborated with faculty and students to organize and develop resource materials that promote diversity, inclusion (anti-racism), equity, belonging and justice (DEIBJ).

High Schoolers Prepare to Become First-Generation Leaders
More than 40 local high school students came to Stockton for a day of tours, interactive sessions and more for the inaugural First to Fly Leadership Symposium on Saturday, June 24.
Organized by Mathematics alumna Alicia Jenkins, ’23, the event was designed for students who would be the first in their families to attend college. During the event, those students were able to explore the campus and discover the people and departments dedicated to supporting student success.
For Jenkins, Stockton’s recent expansions, which include the new Multicultural Center on the Galloway campus and Residence Hall in Atlantic City, provide an opportunity for both students and families to explore how the university will continue to support students in the surrounding community.
“Reaching out to prospective first-generation students in this format is important to provide them with an opportunity to see Stockton University as a higher education institution that is designed to cater to the needs of all students,” Jenkins said. “There are many endless opportunities for traditional and nontraditional students to gain professional, academic and personal growth.”

Celebrating Excellence: Introducing the 2023 IRC Awardees
Each year, the Intramural Recreational Council (IRC) presents three awards to members of the Stockton community: the Dr. Vera King Farris Award, the G. Larry James Award and the Shannon Newberry Award.
The 2023 Dr. Vera King Farris Award recipient is Ariane Newman, associate provost for Academic Success. The Dr. Vera King Farris Award celebrates those within the Stockton community dedicated to helping others better their lives both academically and personally.
The 2023 Shannon Newbury Award recipient is Rodger Jackson, professor of Philosophy. The Shannon Newberry Award recognizes those who have proven their merit in their actions and have worked hard at making Stockton University a better place to learn and teach and have fun doing it.
The 2023 G. Larry James Award recipient is Harry Silverstein, head women’s tennis coach. The G. Larry James Award honors a very talented member of the Stockton IRC Program that excels in athletics, academics and charitable work. The individual has proven their worth by coaching, mentoring or being successful academically.
Additionally, the IRC acknowledged the following individuals for their outstanding work and dedication: Susan Allen, Patricia Collins, Laura Hughes, Mario Librizzi-Laing and John Rosado.

Axe voted to CSC Academic All-America Third Team
Stockton senior Kerstin Axe was voted to the NCAA Division III Academic All-America Women's At-Large Third Team, which is selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC). Axe, a member of the Stockton women's lacrosse team, graduated from Stockton in May with a perfect 4.0 grade point average as a marine science major.
Axe became Stockton's 19th Academic All-American. Her selection marked four straight years and seven of the last eight with at least one Academic All-American for Stockton.

📝 University Stationery Updates Coming
FYI: University Relations & Marketing will update the design of University stationery this summer. Because of this, staff are encouraged to delay replenishing stock until mid-August, when the new designs are expected to be available at the Print Shop.
These designs will be in color, and business cards will now offer a two-sided option.

👉 Normal Academic Hours Next Week; Closed Tuesday
As a reminder, the University will follow normal academic hours next week and be closed for Independence Day on Tuesday, July 4. All offices are open minimally from 8:30 a.m.- 5 p.m., Monday and Wednesday-Friday.

Roster Verification Reminder for Faculty
Attention all faculty teaching this summer: As Summer Session III is underway, it's time to Verify your Ospreys!
New this year, faculty are reminded to complete the Roster Verification process for summer courses by confirming student attendance/academic activity. The Roster Verification process for Summer Session III is to be completed by Saturday, July 1. The Office of Financial Aid will use this information to make adjustments to student financial aid disbursements based on each student's confirmed number of credits.
Each instructor will be responsible for verifying student attendance or participation in an academic activity. For online courses, faculty are reminded to include an assignment or discussion activity during the add/drop period so that the student's academic activity can be confirmed.
