Conference Emphasizes Importance of Teachers of Color
A recent study found that over 50 schools in New Jersey don’t employ a single teacher of color, even though, according to the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA), students of color make up over 50% of state schools.
In response to the wide disparity, faculty members Stacey Culleny and Meg White of the School of Education created an all-day conference for high school students to promote the field of education.
The Future Teachers of Color Conference came to fruition May 17 with more than 200
local students in attendance.
White remembered seeing a student walk into one of the sessions and immediately point out one of the many multicultural posters adorning the walls. On them were various philosophers, artists and authors of color, and lessons in Math and English from different parts of the world, including India. The Indian student smiled as he told White about the poster and what he liked about it, which affirmed White’s goal of centering the experiences of people of color in education for this conference.
Successful Aging Festival Pairs Seniors with Services
By 2030, 1 in 5 adults will be over the age of 65.
The fastest-growing segment of the population is those over the age of 85.
Eight out of 10 seniors want to stay in their homes and “age in place.”
This is the message Barbara Hughes Sullivan, national director of the Village to Village Network, brought to the Successful Aging Festival at Stockton on May 23.
“Technology, smart devices, telehealth — these all help seniors to plan ahead for aging in place,” said Sullivan, the keynote speaker.
The daylong event was organized by the Stockton Center on Successful Aging (SCOSA), and drew about 350 seniors from Atlantic, Cape May and Ocean counties. Attendees had the opportunity to attend breakout sessions where they learned tips for healthy eating, exercise and using smartphones. They could also gather information from over 40 exhibitors and vendors, ranging from physical therapy to assisted living to insurance.

North to Shore Festival Events in Atlantic City
The inaugural North to Shore Festival will kick off in Atlantic City from June 4-11, and Stockton will host several cultural events, a health fair and an esports tournament as part of the month-long event.
The inaugural festival highlights more than 100 events in more than 50 venues in Atlantic City, Asbury Park (June 14-18) and Newark (June 21-25). From concerts to comedy to movies, the festival features national names, such as Halsey and Stephen Colbert, and undiscovered New Jersey talent, like many of the events being held at the Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton University.

Heather Perez, special collections librarian at Stockton, just completed her fifth year at the
University, but she has had a passion for preserving Atlantic City's rich history
far longer than that. Here, she discusses a recent collaboration with Henrietta Shelton of the Chicken Bone
Beach Historical Foundation, Inc. and Ronald Stephens of Purdue University that resulted
in the publication of the book, "Chicken Bone Beach." The piece explores the space
along the Atlantic City shoreline that local families and African American vacationers
occupied from the 1900s-1960s.

Stockton Sets Three School Records at AARTFC Championships
The men’s track & field team set three school records to highlight its performance on May 18 at the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Championships. The Ospreys finished 13th out of 47 women's teams and tied for 23rd out of 43 men's teams at the two-day meet, which was held at Susquehanna University.
The women's 4x800 relay team won and set a school record (9:30.79) with a trio of freshmen in Kayla Kass, Gabriella Collins and Rachel Hayes plus senior Lauren Maldonado. The quartet knocked four seconds off the previous mark that stood for seven years.
Erik Ackerman was the top finisher for the men's team with a school record in the 1500m (3:53.94) that was good for third place.
Swedlund Named USILA All-America Honorable Mention for Fourth Time
Stockton graduate student Luc Swedlund was named USILA All-America Honorable Mention by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association for the third straight year and fourth time in his career.
Swedlund, who played four full seasons (2018-19, 2022-23) plus two COVID-shortened seasons (6 games in 2020, 9 games in 2021), became the first four-time USILA All-America honoree in the program's 37-year history. He was chosen USILA All-America Honorable Mention in 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023.

👉 Normal Academic Hours Next Week; Closed Monday
The University will follow normal academic hours next week and will be closed for Memorial Day on Monday, May 29. All offices are open minimally from 8:30 a.m.- 5 p.m., Tuesday-Friday. There will not be a compressed work week/flexible work schedule option.
