Daylong Event Immerses High Schoolers in the Coast

Atlantic City High School science teacher Emily Loeb likes to bring her classes to Stockton's annual Coast Day because it can be tough to make her classroom interactive every day.

"To have hands-on experiences like Coast Day makes the learning experience fun for my high school students,” said the 2023 Stockton graduate.

The annual event returned on Friday, Oct. 18 at the Fannie Lou Hamer Event Room at the university’s Atlantic City campus. The annual event brought the community together to celebrate coastal culture, beach activities and environmental sustainability.

“With the floating idea outreach and the focus on K-12 schools,” said Susanne Moskalski, coordinator of the event and associate professor of Marine Science, “students have the chance to interact with tons of exhibitors.”

This engagement inspires high school students, like John Guzman-Herrera, to consider majoring in Marine Science, and allows them to explore aspects of the coast that are not visible in their own backyards.

Ospreys give studentsUniversity Foundation Raises $445,000 Through Ospreys Give

The Stockton University Foundation raised more than $445,000 from more than 1,150 donors to support Stockton students and programs during the seventh annual Ospreys Give campaign.

The fundraising campaign took place from 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, and featured a variety of engaging on-campus events — including a kick-off party, games and gatherings — all aimed at fostering a spirit of philanthropy and encouraging participation.

“I am immensely grateful for the support of our community during Ospreys Give,” said President Joe Bertolino. “Every donation, no matter the size, makes a difference in the lives of our students and helps us continue to provide a transformative educational experience.”

For the second year in a row, Spencer’s and Spirit Halloween served as the lead sponsor and committed $250,000 to be unlocked as donor goals were reached throughout the campaign.

Poll: Offshore Wind Not High Priority for N.J. Voters

Offshore wind projects are not a high priority for New Jersey voters, including those who support wind turbines, according to a Stockton poll released on Oct. 22.

Just over half (52%) of voters somewhat (24%) or strongly (29%) support the installation of offshore wind turbines off the coast of New Jersey, while 9% somewhat oppose and 24% strongly oppose. These rates remain stable since a September 2023 Stockton poll. That poll found a sharp decline in support since the previous iteration in 2019.

When voters who oppose wind turbines were asked for their top reason, most (51%) cited environmental concerns for marine life or the ocean ecosystem, followed by costs (8%), including the cost to produce turbines or the energy costs associated with their use.

Support aside, offshore wind projects are not a big priority for most New Jersey voters. Only 24% said offshore wind projects should be a major priority for the state, while 37% said they should be a minor priority and 29% said they should not be a priority at all.

Talon at University WeekendPicture Stockton... Turning Campus into a Street Fair

As part of University Weekend, the Galloway campus was transformed into a street fair with vendors, food trucks, a cornhole tournament and inflatable games. But first, there was a parade led by Talon.

Students were tasked with decorating golf carts to illustrate this year's theme celebrating a decade of growth and change. In 2025, Stockton will celebrate its 10th anniversary of becoming a university.

Stockton Rallies with Late Goals for 2-1 Victory

The men’s soccer team scored two late goals to rally for a key 2-1 conference victory on Oct. 23 at Rutgers-Newark. The win lifted the Ospreys into a tie for fourth place with two league games to go.

Starting forwards Joseph Carbone and Ernst Louisius scored just over four minutes apart to erase a 1-0 deficit that Stockton had faced for nearly 70 minutes after an early Rutgers-Newark goal 5:09 into the match.

Carbone netted his fourth marker of the season with 15:31 remaining to pull the Ospreys into a 1-1 tie. Only 4:09 later, Louisius struck for his team-leading seventh goal of the year to give Stockton its first lead of the game with 11:22 remaining. Antonio Matos assisted on the game-winner. Read more game coverage here.

Stockton will play its penultimate game of the regular season at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, when they host #19-ranked Montclair State.
