Arts & Culture
Stockton is committed to supporting the creative works of students and artists in the region and beyond through a variety of educational and cultural programs.
State of the Arts and ‘Hellenism Through the Ages'
Stockton and the New Jersey State Council of the Arts, in collaboration with PCK Media, co-produced a segment for State of the Arts, featuring renowned artist Georgios Kordis and his mural “Hellenism Through the Ages in Nature, Spirit and the Arts,” currently on permanent display in the Constantelos Hellenic Collection and Reading Room at Stockton. The episode aired May 27, 2018 on WHYY and NJTV.
In November 2017, Lisa Honaker, dean of the School of Arts & Humanities (ARHU), Nancy Messina, former assistant dean of ARHU, and Pantelia (Lia) Bairaktaris, associate director of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, traveled to Athens, Greece to capture Kordis’ inspirations. The first segment was filmed at Kordis’ studio in Athens and a Greek Orthodox Church in neighboring Vouliagmeni. Later in March 2018, Susan Waller of PCK Media, filmed the final segment in the Constantelos Reading Room at Stockton.
48 Blocks
Stockton once again partnered with the Atlantic City Arts Foundation to sponsor "48 Blocks," a celebration of arts and creativity, featuring dozens of projects and events along Atlantic City's 48 Blocks. Several Stockton faculty, staff, students and alumni played a role in the second annual celebration June 22-24, 2018.
Dance Program Recognized
Assistant Professor of Dance Beau Hancock and Assistant Professor of Dance Caitlin Quinn Pittinger brought 18 dance students to the annual American College Dance Association conference. A work by Stockton guest artist, Robert Moses Kin, called "The Supplicant," was chosen to be highlighted in the culminating Gala Concert. The work was selected for excellence and received spectacular feedback from professionals in the field. The students were thrilled to represent Stockton and demonstrate the strength of the Dance program. Students also performed their own works, and Pittinger and Hancock performed and led master classes.
Handmade Paper Art
Japanese paper artist Kyoko Ibe presented an exhibit and play at the Stockton Art Gallery in fall 2017. The exhibit, titled “Once Upon a Time” featured artworks made of “washi” or handmade paper. Ibe and assistant Tamura Tadashi also performed an original play “Recycling: Washi Tales.”
