WHAT WE’RE TALKING ABOUT

Live-Work-Learn program studentsLive-Work-Learn Program Leads to Jobs for Some Graduates

As the Stockton Atlantic City Summer Experience: Live-Work-Learn program enters its fourth year, not only are students getting to live for free, work in local industry and learn about career readiness — they also are getting full-time jobs after graduation.

“Having the opportunity to gain an internship and then have it evolve into a full-time job, especially with how things are right now for most people postgraduation, I feel very fortunate,” said Emma Martin, a 2025 Political Science graduate. She’s now the Office and Operations Manager for the Chelsea Economic Development Corporation in Atlantic City after working with the group last summer. “And it’s a job that I really enjoy doing.”

The Summer Experience — dubbed “Live-Work-Learn” — has offered hundreds of Stockton University students paid jobs with Atlantic City businesses, campus housing covered by the employers, and a series of career readiness training modules focused on teamwork, leadership, critical thinking and character development.

Craig Lind, an associate professor of Biology, and his students are studying how temperature impacts reptile health. Their fieldwork site is just a few minutes away from their classroom at Lake Fred.

A reptile’s immune system fights off pathogens across a broad range of temperatures from just above freezing during hibernation to a blazing hot summer day while basking in the sun.

Lind wants to better understand if reptiles will be able to adapt with climate change. He is focusing on six reptiles that live in Lake Fred: the northern water snake, common snapping turtle, redbellied turtle, mud turtle, musk turtle and painted turtle.

Stockton Recognized in Transfer Honor Roll for Fourth Year in a Row

Stockton has once again been named to the Transfer Honor Roll by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society for its transfer-friendly policies for community college students.

Transfer Honor Roll logoStockton is one of 251 colleges and universities that are being acknowledged for “the dynamic pathways they have created to support transfer students.” The 2025 list marks the fourth consecutive year Stockton has been included.

The honor roll — determined by 40 key metrics related to the support and success of transfer students — is chosen from among the top 25% of highest-rated colleges that have submitted data to PTK Connect, the honor society’s online tool for helping students find colleges and career opportunities.

“Stockton is proud to be recognized for our commitment to transfer students. From affordability and seamless admissions to strong support for bachelor’s degree completion, we are dedicated to creating pathways that empower community college transfer students to succeed,” said Heather Medina, director of Admissions.

College-Preparedness Program Continues to Support Area Students

In just four-minute increments, local youth learned a lot about a variety of careers and industries as they weaved through tables in the Fannie Lou Hamer Event Room at Stockton Atlantic City.

More than 20 professionals represented health care, media, technology, entrepreneurship, education and other industries at the GOALS GEAR UP July 30 Speed Jobbing event.

GOALS GEAR UP program

“Exposing our GOALS students to young professionals is essential to their growth and vision for the future,” Alexis Jenkins, director of GOALS GEAR UP, said. “When they see individuals who look like them achieving success in a range of fields, it not only broadens their perspective but also reinforces the idea that their dreams are possible. Representation inspires, and inspiration fuels action.”

GOALS GEAR UP — which stands for Goal-Oriented Advocates, Leaders and Scholars – Gaining Early Awareness for Undergraduate Programs — is a program that enables eligible students to begin considering the pursuit of higher education.

There are 130 students in grades 7-12 from Pleasantville and Atlantic City participating in the six-week GOALS GEAR UP Summer Academy that concludes Aug. 7.

Student Affairs Initiatives Recognized with Award

Jamael Harrison (pictured right), director of Student Affairs Assessment and Communication, and Ashlee Roberts (pictured lower left), executive director of Student Affairs Strategic Planning and Initiatives, were recently honored with the Anthology Catalyst Award for Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness.

Ashlee Roberts

This award recognizes Anthology users who have successfully grown in their assessment practices and influenced positive behavioral change using Anthology solutions. This includes developing best practices that cultivate and sustain a collaborative culture of assessment where results are used for continuous improvement efforts; implementing assessment tools and technologies that increase effectiveness by growing the total number of completed assessments, number of programs, students, and/or outcomes assessed; and helping ensure assessment cycle phases are completed on time. Also highlighted are innovative assessment initiatives that provide valuable insights and enable institutions to make data-informed decisions to increase curricular effectiveness.

To qualify for the award, Harrison said he submitted documentation such as their presentations and feedback from their workshop series, Bird’s-Eye View (BEV).

“We launched this series last January to reinvigorate the use of our assessment platform, starting with Baseline, a survey tool," Harrison noted. “Our goal was to build a culture of assessment where staff understand how to design and implement assessment of student learning and operations to understand effectiveness and inform decision-making around programs and practices."
