Assessment and Treatment Options for Childhood Apraxia of Speech

Assessment and Treatment Options for Childhood Apraxia of Speech

Thursday, February 27, 2025

via Zoom 6:00pm-8:00pm

Course Description:

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a complex neurological speech sound disorder (SSD) characterized by impairments in speech motor planning and programming. The primary speech deficits associated with CAS involve difficulty sequencing motor movements for speech, despite the absence of muscle weakness. This results in both segmental errors (e.g., vowel and consonant distortions) and suprasegmental errors (e.g., inappropriate lexical stress). These deficits can present as speech sound errors, prosodic abnormalities, and articulatory breakdowns.

As speech-language pathologists (SLPs), it is crucial to understand these speech deficits when assessing and treating children with CAS. This 2-hour presentation will provide an overview of CAS and its core speech characteristics, as well as explore how the principles of motor learning influence both assessment and treatment approaches for children with this disorder.

Objectives: At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the characteristics of Childhood Apraxia of Speech
  2. Determine appropriate assessment tools for diagnostic testing of Childhood Apraxia of Speech
  3. Determine appropriate intervention approaches for treating Childhood Apraxia of Speech
