About Our New Program Start Up...

The Success CHAMP Initiative was developed under the leadership of Dr. Ana Edmonson, Assistant Vice President of Student Transitions, Access and Retention to support and enhance the existing Success Scholars Program. The majority of the Success CHAMPs are professional staff in the Division of Student Affairs. Succes CHAMPs will be assigned first-time freshmen. Specifically, all new First-Time, FirstYear students admitted Fall 2024 into Student Success Scholars. 

Introduction & Pillars

The Success CHAMP Program at Stockton University implements an holistic intervention targeting academically at-risk students early in their academic career. This program aims to increase student persistence, enhance knowledge of navigating resources, and foster a sense of belonging among First-Time, First-Year students through the  Success CHAMP Program.

116 Program Participants: New First-Time, First-Year students admitted Fall 2024 into Success CHAMP Program.

Success CHAMPs

At least 43 professional staff in the Division of Student Affairs (including Student Affairs Leadership Council members) and extend the opportunity to other divisional members with at least a Bachelor’s Degree and 1 or more years of experience in Higher Education.

Responsibilities

Each Success CHAMP mentor will manage a caseload of 2 students for the entirety of the school year.

      1.Students will;

    • Receive ample time and attention.
    • Strengthen relations with their Champ within first 6 weeks upon match.
    • Meet bi-weekly to review and discuss their academic progress and educational endeavors.
    • Attend tutoring sessions ( TBD)
    • Establish a sense of community and engagement.
  1. Success CHAMPs will;
    • Provide Supportive Frameworks (e.g. appreciative advising model)
    • Facilitate conversation flow to obtain relevant information about the student through standardized questions.
    • Utilize information about the student to report their ongoing progress, or make sound decisions if they encounter academic hurdles by extending resources and documenting.

Success CHAMP Training and Readiness

  1. Will complete comprehensive training.
  2. Attend monthly meetings to share successes, address challenges, and discuss best practices.

Pro-Tips for our Success CHAMP

  • Establish initial contact within six weeks of the semester.
  • Facilitate significant interactions to enhance student success.
  • Develop relationships to ensure students feel appreciated.
  • Inform students about the resources at their disposal.
  • Continuously evaluate student requirements and adapt support accordingly.
  • Assign full-time staff members specifically for support.
  • Engage in active listening to grasp student viewpoints.
  • Encourage students to be responsible for their achievements.
  • Ensure students are responsible for their obligations.

Performance Metric for Students

Success CHAMP Program Inventory and Rubric:

  • Administered in the second meeting to understand students' academic strategies.
  • Discussions will be featured based on inventory responses, focusing on success strategies from the student success survey.

Methods of Tracking and Assessment:

  • Logging Interactions:
    • Documenting bi-weekly interactions and referrals via EAB Navigate.
  • Z-Number Tracking:
    • Assessing success and participation based on Z-numbers.
  • Success Assessment:
    • Comparing success rates of participating versus non-participating students.
    • EAB Reports, Surveys, and focus groups.
  • Resource Referral:
    • Champs document referrals to academic, and personal resources utilizing EAB Navigate.
    • Monthly tracking and assessment to measure participation and success.
